The purpose of this study is to analyze the dental health status of the elderly and to identify its affecting factors. For this purpose, a total of 823 persons over 60 years old in Mokpo, Korea, were interviewed. The period of survey was February 1-February 15, 1992, The major findings are as follows : 1. A high percentage of the elderly is suffering from dental illness : gingival bleeding at toothbrushing, 48. 7%, sensitivity to cold and /or warm foods, 64. 4%, gingival swelling, 49. 2%, foul order, 55. 5%, masticatory disturbance with dentifacial pain, 48. 9%, dentifacial illness, 32%. 2. The female show higher percentage of gingival swelling and other dentifacial illness than the male, which is considered to result from the poor dental health care during pregnancy. 3. Persons with many remaining teeth(11-16) show lower percentage of dentifacial pain complaints than persons with small remaining teeth(1-10). 4. Dental health status show a high relationship with acute and chronic illness.
