Fragile X Mental Retardation-1 (FMR-1) 유전자에 의해 형성되는 Fragile X mental retardation protein (FMRP)는 RNA-binding 단백질이며 번역 억제자 (translation repressor) 기능이 알려져 있다. 염색체 내 FMR-1 유전자 변이로 인한 FMRP 발현 감소는 희귀질환으로 분류되는 취약 X 증후군(Fragile X Syndrome)을 유발하며 취약 X 증후군의 치아 형성단계에서 치아성숙이 가속화됨을 보고하였다. Microtubule-Associated Protein 1b (MAP-1b)는 신경세포의 신경돌기와 시냅스 형성에서 작용하며 FMRP에 의하여 번역 억제를 조절을 받는 표적 물질이다. 배양된 상아질모세포를 이용한 FMRP 발현 연구에서는 상아질모세포의 세포막과 세포돌기에서 관찰되었다. 면역조직화학법에서 MAP-1b는 종시기 치배의 교두정 상아질모세포에서 강한 발현을 시작하여 치경부에 이르는 단계적 감소를 제시하였다. 더불어 우식치아에서 수복상아질 형성을 위해 새롭게 분화하는 odontoblast-like cell에서 MAP-1b가 발현되었다. 본 종설에서는 선행 보고를 바탕으로 치아발생과정에서 발현되는 FMRP와 MAP-1b의 고찰을 통하여 치아 발생에서 관련성을 알아보고자 한다.
