The purpose of this study is to investigate the 'privacy paradox' phenomenon in social media service, which is while social media (e.g., Facebook) users are concerned about their privacy, they do still provide their personal information. Based on the previous studies and theories, privacy concern and privacy risk are chosen as key negative direct factors affecting self-disclose in online activities and social relevance as a moderating variable between those relationships. After collecting 359 valid questionnaires from Facebook users in South Korea, the authors applied a hierarchical regression technique to analyze the data and tested the hypotheses.
The result of this study reveal that Facebook users with higher level of social relevance with their social media activities than those with lower social relevance show privacy paradox but in case of the users with lower level of social relevance demonstrates rational behavior in terms of controlling their privacy, which means that when they have privacy concerns, they hesitate disclosing their personal information. Result also shows that social relevance significantly moderates the relationship between privacy concern and self-disclose, but does not show the moderating effect on the relationship between privacy risk and self-disclos
