    이 논문의 목적은 인간의 성문제가 어떻게 이해되고 다루어지며, 여성의 사회적 지위와 역할이 고대 그리스의 경우에는 어떠했고, 그것이 오늘날 한국사회에 미칠 수 있는 영향을 파악하고자 하는 것이다.
    이 논문은 우선 그리스에서 에로스와 사랑이 의미했던 것을 설명하고, 고대 그리스에 있어서 여성의 사회적 지위를 여러 가지 문헌들을 통해 해명하며, 그 당시에 축첩제도와 매춘의 문제, 결혼과 이혼에 대한 실제와 태도를 탐색한다. 그리고 그것이 우리에게 시사하는 바를 검토하고자 한다.

    The purpose of this study is that how the human sex problems were understood and treated, and what social position and the role of the women were like in ancient greece, the origin of European culture, and the influence of western culture on modern Korean society.
    The ancient Greeks gave to the women the roles of the naturally obtained maternity and the prostitution. The most Greek women’s goal and objectives were to be a good mother and serving for her family and husband. In the other hand the ancient Greek men could have prostitutes for pleasure, concubines for making-up his body, and legally wives for descendants and households.
    Until 3 century B.C. at least, the marriage was just a joining two families. The marriage of daughter were dependant on the hand of the father. The man of nearest relatives was taken over the father's role when the father was absent. Officially, the dowry system, wedding present, were abolished in 1981, but it is still continuing in recent Greek society. That is because it give a chance of increase of the estate for men and a chance of marriage for women. The other aspect is that it prevent the divorce for the dowry was returned to women’s family when they were divorced by men’s fault. On the other hand, men could rely on concubines instead of divorce. The concubines were free women and most of them were immigrants from other countries.
    The prostitution, one of most old profession, were practiced in various ways. Hetairae, especially invited to symposion, were well educated and had good skills. Those hetairae donated large amount of money to the government or shrines to get high social position, and kept relationship with celebrity.
    The ancient Greek had generous custom that the love and sex were very natural and free. They thought the life and nature collectively and gave worship to the physical body as the shrine for spirit and soul. As physical body and mind were thought to be inseparable one thing, the sex was expressed and used openly, apart from the conceptual and philosophic consideration. For ancient Greek the eros was the very origin of everything in the world.
