미셸 푸코의 소크라테스 해석과 자기 배려의 교육 = Michel Foucault`s Interpretation of Socrates and Education of Self-Care

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Socrates` philosophy has been mainly interpreted with priority given to the motto `Arete is episteme` so far. It`s traditionally said that this motto implies that building up one`s rational function is the precondition of virtuous life, and that the rational function of mind means intellectual perfection about things or appearances. According to Michel Foucault ancient philosophy was, however, not cognitive and epistemological studies like learning abstract theories, trying logical consistency or defining a concept. The Problem of philosophy in antiquity was an exercise for conversion of the whole Self as being: it has something to do with practises which change our life more virtuously and morally; it is an activity for restoration of pure self which is covered with the unessential conditions of life like pride, passion and anxiety. Foucault calls this old tradition of ancient philosophy `self-care` and locates the life and thoughts of Socrates in this tradition. The purpose of this study is to interpret Socrates in point of view of `self-care` and clarify its educational meanings. For this, I am going to, first of all, look for the position that self-care and self-knowledge take in history of philosophy and investigate their mutual relationship as philosophical task. Then I will trace Heidegger`s philosophical influences on Foucault`s thought. I will think over the meanings of modern education of self-care at the conclusion.
