한국 현대소설의 진화론적 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 목적은 진화에 관한 이론과 개념을 활용하여 한국 현대소설을 새롭게 해석하는 데 있다. 지난 3년간의 연구 수행결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다.
첫째, 이청준의 <당신들의 천국><퇴원><소문의 벽><병신과 머저리> 등은 개체선택을 중심으로 지배, 복종, 반지배라는 인간의 진화된 성향을 드러낸다. 이런 맥락에서, 본 연구는 (1)지배서열과 반지배서열의 전략, (2)마음이론과 개체의 자율성, (3)우선순위(triage) 문제와 이기적 생존을 해명하였다.
둘째, 조정래의 <태백산맥>은 관련하여 친족선택과 집단선택 사이의 충돌을 중심으로 집단 내적 갈등 및 집단 외적 갈등을 드러낸다. 이런 맥락에서, 본 연구는 (1)친족선택과 민족/계급문제, (2)집단선택과 이타주의, (3)주입과 밈(meme) 경쟁, (4)보복의 이기성과 이타성으로 나누어 분석하였다.
셋째, 박경리의 『토지』은 친족선택과 집단선택의 결합 가능성을 중심으로 민족주의와 이타주의를 강조한다. 이런 맥락에서, 본 연구는 (1)이기적 친족선택과 모성, (2)이타적 집단선택과 민족, (3)도덕공동체와 소문내기(gossiping)의 기능을 해명하였다.
이러한 차이는 작품이 다루는 역사적 배경의 차이와 무관하지 않다. <토지>가 국권회복을 위해 투쟁의 무대를 확장하고 친족선택과 집단선택의 결합을 보인다면, <태백산맥>은 한반도 내에서의 사회주의 혁명실천이라는 목표를 두고 친족선택과 집단선택 사이의 길항을 드러낸다. 그러나 한국전쟁 이후 냉전적 사고가 강화되면서 제3의 지대나 한반도 전체를 탈출가능한 장소로 상상하기 어려웠다. 이청준의 소설이 개체선택을 강조한 이유가 여기에 있다.

Abstract

Evolutionary Approach on Korean Modern Novels

The objective of the study is to provide a fresh interpretation and evaluation of Korean modern novels, particularly Chungjun Yi’s <This Paradise of Yours (Dangsindeurui cheonguk)>, Jo Jung Rae’s < Taebaek Mountain Range (Taebaek sanmaek)> and Pak Kyongni’s <The Land (Toji)> based on the theory and concepts of evolution.
The summary of the last three years of research is as follows.
First, Chungjun Yi’s <Paradise of Yours (Dangsindeurui cheonguk><Discharge (Toewon)><The Wall of Rumor (Somun ui Byeok)><An Imbecile and an Idiot (Byeongsin gwa mejeori)> mainly focused on individual selection and revealed evolved dispositions, such as dominance, submission and anti-dominance. Under this context, this study explains (1) the strategy of dominance and anti-dominance hierarchies (2) theory of mind and an individual’s autonomy, and (3) the problem of triage and selfish survival.
Second, Jo Jung Rae’s <Taebaek Mountain Range (Taebaek sanmaek)> focused on conflicts between kin selection and group selection, showing intragroup and intergroup conflicts. Under this context, this study analyzes separately in terms of (1) kin selection and ethnicity/class problem, (2) group selection and altruism, (3) a
