This study analyzed human–machine collaborative dance from the perspective of the principles of performance formation. Through the case of YangBOT, it was confirmed that collaboration does not simply present robots as dancers, but organizes scenes through role rules and functional separation.
Robots are positioned as performing agents that enhance repeatability and regularity, while costume and visual design maintain difference while simultaneously implementing unity and contrast. Props and music connect the constraints of robots and dancers with the effects of each scene, and movements and formations establish the conditions for joint performance. Collaboration structures the overall performance through placement and transition rules rather than improvisational imitation, and fixed role rules may lead the collaborative structure to converge toward functional division. This study shifts the central question of human–machine collaboration from “Can robots dance like humans?” to “How are role differentiation and coordination, premised on difference, organized as formal rules within the costume, props, music, movement, and formation of a performance?” Furthermore, it demonstrates concretely that collaboration does not function as declarative coexistence, but rather operates as a repeatable principle of formal organization
