The purpose of this study is to explore the types of challenging behaviors of children with developmental disabilities, and their difficulties and coping methods through empirical research about dance art instructors in welfare facilities for the disabled for social, cultural, and artistic education.
For this purpose, this study selected five dance art instructors with more than eight years of educational experience for children with developmental disabilities at welfare facilities for the disabled, conducted two to three in-depth interviews from September to December 2024, and analyzed the data using Van Manen's hermeneutic phenomenological research method. As a result, first, the self-adjusting responses of children with developmental disabilities due to space movement and control loss were found to be getting out of seat, stubbornness, and beating. Second, their difficulty in the maintenance of time continuity was found to be movement encouragement, learner's learning transfer, and class flow breaking. Third, their emotional stability and self-expression through personal relationship were found to be building social ties and using art integration education. The challenging behavior of children with developmental disabilities mentioned by dance art instructors is not a simple matter. Therefore, it is necessary to think deeply about how to cope with their behavioral problems, analyze them with specific goals and move forward to settle them. For children with developmental disabilities with challenging behavior, art integration education through dance can foster their adaptability to cooperate in the community and can provide them with an opportunity to actively participate through various processes to create the possibility of transforming challenging behavior into positive behavior
