The purpose of this paper is to examine the change aspects of writer's spirit in Chae Man-Sik's works produced in his first and second period.
Generally, Chae Man-Sik's works show these change aspects.
(1) As seen in his maiden work, <A Transitional Period>, his early works generally show the nihilistic character.
(2) Starting with the work <The Play of Life>, he produced the works which have several subject-matters, i.g., the problem of unemployed intelligentsia, labourer and the true picture of rural community, which symbolize the pro letaria ideology
(3) <A Muddy Stream> is the work which has a tragic ending-structure, writer looks upon the downfall of Jung Ju Sa's family not as the personal problem but historical problem.
(4) <A Peaceful World> represents his satiric work and we can find optimistic satire on the social side of this work. And we can also find ironic satire in other works, <An Stupid Uncle>, <Little Dotage>.
It seems that his satire is a variety of nihilism or a development shape and at the same time contains the social ideology.
