This paper examines the influence of Japanese colonial legacies on the Battle of Chosin Reservoir during the Korean War, employing the natural, spatial, and social elements of military geography as analytical framework. Drawing on historical records from South Korea, China, the United States, and Japan, the study identifies the colonial legacies established in the northern Korean Peninsula through the North Joseon Development Project, encompassing transportation networks, hydraulic infrastructure, topographical modifications, and cartographic surveying. Building upon this foundation, the paper analyzes how these colonial legacies shaped the strategic decision-making of both the Chinese People's Volunteer Army(CPV) and the U.S. forces during the battle. The findings reveal that during the strategic deployment phase, the cognitive framework inherited from the colonial period constituted one of the contributing factors behind the U.S. military's misreading of Chinese intervention intentions. Furthermore, both sides' reliance on outdated maps produced during the Japanese colonial period generated structural discrepancies between available geographic intelligence and actual battlefield conditions, thereby constraining the operational deployment of both forces. During the combat phase, the road networks and artificial topographical features such as reservoirs constructed during the colonial era directly restricted the selection of offensive axes and tactical dispositions for both sides, compelling both forces to conduct their operations within the spatial parameters defined by colonial infrastructural legacies. These findings demonstrate the substantive impact of Japanese colonial legacies on the progression and outcome of the Battle of Chosin Reservoir.
