In Christian ethics, virtue is not the prerequisite of salvation but the response of God's grace. For Christian salvation is given by faith, by grace(sola fide, sola gratia). Particulary, in the Korean Church, virtue is considered as the ideal principle of Christian decision making. Korean Christians translated the term 'οικοδομη' into 'performance of virtue'(建德). In St. Paul, 'οικοδομεω' means 'strengthen', 'edify', 'establish' etc., but it seems that the Korean Church mixed the oriental community nuance to this term.
Koreans tend to consider virtue as the examplary action for others. The Korean Christian's term says 'lets act virtuously'. The Korean Christian considers the Church as the body of Christ and the holy community of saints, so they want to act as a pattern for others. To act virtuously is to strengthen others through concern for others. That is the Korean meaning of 'οικοδομη'.
The aim of virtue in Korean Church is to strengthen the church for Christ and the saints. The task of saints is maturation of faith. To achive this task, saints act virtuously so as to strengthen, to edify, and to establish the Christ's church. In this view, the Korean translation of 'οικοδομεω’into 'virtue' has meaningful ethical significance.
The most difficult task for 'virtue' in Christian ethics is the problem of alternatives on Niebuhrian solution of 'collective egoism' in modern organized society. Korean Christians confront with the difficulty of confliction between christian virtue and collective egoism, church membership ethic and organized society membership demand. Which is the most sound selection? Evidently, the organized society is different to the Christian church, but the most context of modern ethical problem are issued this very organized society.
