Acting called for Oriental monism or Western dualism. People hesitated to choose the other option. This study aims at proposing the new acting domain, and embracing a subject and an object of recognition. The more important theme will be the boundary between them.
An actor's mental change and boundary is the concept about existence, experienced and recognized in conscious and physical space by an actor while preparing for a performance. The boundary recognized in changing place is invisible, but it influences the performance, when an actor experiences mental and physical change, and variety of feeling such as uneasiness, tension and excitement. It shouldn't be dealt with as an actor's up and down, or lack of exercise and practice, but recognized as the specific profession's unique problem. I want to prove that the mental obstruction is between the conscious boundary, and it has the possibility to be utilized as acting skill.
This study tries to approach to the new point of view about the boundary influencing an actor's acting, define the boundary in real performance stage experienced by an actor, analyze changing aspect, and finally discuss on how the boundary influences the acting and performance.
Based on the elements above, it is analyzed how the boundary exists by the special nature of drama, an actor's acting, and a live performance. And I try to combine it with boundary and changing process. Secondly it is defined and analyzed the mental and physical space and change experienced by an actor as a subject in the performance in order to propose basic concept about boundary in the performing space. Thirdly an actor's mental boundary spot is analyzed with their interviews and cases about physiological fear on the stage in order to propose practical cases to support the discussion on an actor's mental boundary in the performing space.
This study is about an actor and for an actor. It starts from the discussion on an actor, comprehension on the actor's experience, existence, and changing roles, and finally becomes the practical basic work.
This study includes the actor's experience, beginning with an actor's recognition about 'existence in the boundary and change in performing space'. I expect my hands-on experience in the drama performance can promote the new approach in the arena of research such as dramatics, and performing arts.
