This phenomenological study explored how midshipmen at the Korea Naval Academy experience combat swimming training. Semi-structured interviews with 12 midshipmen and 3 naval officers were analyzed using Colaizzi’s (1978) method. Six themes emerged: fear in an unfamiliar sea environment, physical and psychological struggle, solidarity with peers, discomfort within coercive routines, embodied recognition of leadership, and growth retained as bodily memory. Participants initially experienced intense fear and fatigue, but gradually developed pacing, breathing regulation, and self-trust through repeated practice. The same training procedures were embodied differently depending on individual physical capacity, emotional state, and prior experience, revealing an ambivalent experience in which growth and burden coexisted. These findings suggest that combat swimming training functions not only as survival practice but also as an embodied learning context in which leadership and responsibility are enacted.
