This study analyzes Shihan biji (󰡔使韓筆記󰡕) of Fei Debao(費德保) describing various features in early years of the Korean Empire. The book has been kept in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Library(廣西壯族自治區圖書館) in China. The book contains various essays of Fei describing the scenes of Mangyuksun(望六旬) Mangsuseongjeol(萬壽聖節), the 51-year birthday party of Emperor Gojong, and Chinggyeongyesik(稱慶禮式) celebrating the 40th anniversary of enthronement(御極40年) of Emperor Gojong(高宗); travel sketches on two palaces of Korea, Changdeokgung and Gyeongbokgung; impressions of watching motion pictures at the Dongdaemun Motion Pictures House; some photos taken in the Embassy of the Qing Dynasty by the employees of it. Those records are useful in the sense that they show various features of early years of the empire which have not been revealed up to now.
Two rites, Mangyuksun Mangsuseongjeol and 40 years on the throne Chinggyeongyesik were held by Emperor Gojong(高宗) to widely publicize the existence of the Korean Empire by inviting foreign diplomatic representatives in Korea. The former was held at Dondeokjeon(惇德殿), and the latter at Hamnyeongjeon(咸寧殿). After formal ceremonies, guests were treated with Western style buffet, Western music, and traditional court dance. Employees of Qing Embassy were guided by Koreans to visit the two palaces, Changdeokgung(昌德宮) and Gyeongbokgung(景福宮). According to Fei, while the latter was a little smaller than the former, it was more excellent in its features, and arrangements of buildings than the former. Motion pictures shown at the Dongdaemun Motion Pictures House consisted of the sizes of 15 and 16 cheoks. The movie house consisted of two floors, and seats were divided into three classes. The book also describes the features of the Qing Embassy(淸國公使署). Its area was more than 30 mu(畝), and it was composed of various buildings including Ambassador Building, Consul Building, Banquet Building, and Office Building. It contains some photos taken by embassy workers.
