    The purpose of this study is to define what are more important and more frequent nursing problem in clinic, and to confirm whether NANDA nursing diagnosis is adaptable to Korean nursing practice.
    The subjects of this study are hospitalized patients in Chung-Ang University Yongsan Hospital from April 20 1987 to September 5, 1987. The investigator of this study selected a patient at the ward conference of each department and presented an example which nursing diagnoses were applied to. The investigator gathered 515 reports of nursing diagnoses which were obtained after investigator, head nurses of each department and nurses discussed. The instrument used in this study was 51 nursing diagnoses lists in Pocket Guide to Nursing Diagnoses (1984) by Kim, M.J. et al.,
    The results of this study are as following :
    1. The total 2,955 of nursing diagnoses were confirmed among 515 patients, and each patient had the average 515 patients, and each patient had the average 5.7 of nursing diagnoses. The total number of signs & symptoms was 9,572, and each diagnosis had the 3.2 of signs & symptoms.
    2. The percentage order of diagnoses are 'Comfort, alteration in : pain', 'Anxiety' 'Nutrition, alteration in : less than body requirements', 'Bowl elimination, alteration in : constipation', 'Sleep pattern disturbance'. On the contrary, there was no 'Coping family : potential for growth' and 'Rape trauma syndrome'.
    3. In the classification according to 9 human response patterns, the nursing diagnoses correspondent to exchanging was 43.7%, feeling 23.5%, moving 19.2%, perceiving 4.0%, knowing 3.8%, choosing 2.9%, relating 1.6%, communicating 1.2% and valuing 0.1%.
    4. The classification of Category title-Etiology-Defining Characteristics(signs & Symptoms) :
    1) Exchanging :
    In the 185 nursing diagnoses of 'Nutrition, alteration in : less than body requirements', an etiology 'inability to ingest or digest food or absorb nutrients because of biologic, psychologic or economic factors' was 185, and a sign & symptom 'lack of interest in food' was 118.
    2) Communicating :
    In the 36 nursing diagnoses of 'Communication, impaired : verbal', an etiology 'decrease in circulation to the brain' was 16, and a sign & symptom 'unable to speak dominant language' was 7.
    3) Relating :
    In the 32 nursing diagnoses of 'Social isolation', an etiology 'inability to engage in satisfying personal relationships' was 14, and a sign & symptom 'uncommunicative, withdrawn' was 8.
    4) Valuing :
    In the 4 nursing diagnoses of 'Spiritual distress', an etiology 'challenge belief and value system' was 3.
    5) Choosing :
    In the 70 nursing diagnoses of 'Coping, ineffective individual', an etiology 'inadequate coping method' was 21, and a sign & symptom 'verbalization of inability to cope or inability to ask for help' was 10.
    6) Moving :
    In the 159 nursing diagnoses of 'Sleep pattern disturbance', an etiology 'illness' was 80, and a sign & symptom 'verbal complaints of difficulty in falling asleep' was 64.
    7) Perceiving :
    In the 48 nursing diagnoses of 'Sensory-perceptual alteration', an etiology 'altered status of sense organs' was 21, and a sign & symptom 'reported or measured change in sensory acuity' was 19.
    8) Knowing :
    In the 74 nursing diagnoses of 'Knowledge deficit', an etiology 'patients request for no information' was 17, and a sign & symptom 'verbalization of the problem' was 15.
    9) Feeling :
    In the 357 nursing diagnoses of 'Comfort, alteration in : pain', an etiology 'physical injuring agents' was 274, and a sign & symptom 'communication of pain descriptors' was 244.
    5. In the classification of nursing diagnoses according to nursing category, a category, 'Comfort, alteration in : pain' was the highest in almost categories except for pediatric category. And also, in the psychiatric category 'Violence, potential for' and 'Thought process, alteration in' were relatively high, compared with the other categories.
