The purpose of this paper is a diachronic research on a simplification of groups of
vowels in a common Slavic language. For an explanation of such phenomena of
simplifications of groups of vowels, the Theory of the Optimality and Underspecification
Theory are used. The phenomenon of simplifications of groups of the basic vowels, as/i, e, a, 0 , u/) / e, a, 0/ is explained by such constraints as * [+High] ) [+Low] ) [+Back], 10
FAITH.
The monophthongization of diphthongs *ai, *au, *ei) *ĕ , *u, *i is explained by such
hierarchy of constraints as (1) * DIPH ) FAITH (+Low) } FAITH (-Back) ) 10 FAITH, (2) * DIPH) FAITH (+High) ) F AITH (-Back) ) 10 F AITH .
The coalescence ō, ā > ₒā explained by such hierarchy of constraints as *DIPH} Faithfulness constraints (IDENT [High], IDENT [Low], IDENT [Back], IDENT [Round]), Markedness constraints (*[ -high],* [-back], *[+low], *[+round]) 》 Dep-μ .
As it is told, on this work in the development of a _common Slavic language optimal forms of the simplification of vowels have proved to be true on the basis of diachronic research and theories of constraints.
