The study on the 13 villages where many residents have enjoyed longevity shows that geologic and living environments have more influence on human's long life than some genetic factors.
The areas for this study are mainly composed of old granite gneiss. They are composed of intermediate rock growps, sedimentary rock, granite, basalt, and tuff in orders, even if these are smaller in distribution size than old granite gneiss. The alluvium, in particular, is a mixture of sand, gravel and rock.
The villages are mainly located in front of mountains and behind stream and rivers. Their topography are high in elevation for northern aspects and low in elevation for southern aspects, or high in elevation for southern aspects and low in elevation for northern aspects, or high in elevation for western aspects and low in elevation for eastern aspects
The PH of ground water in the public wells used for long periods ranges between weak acid and weak alkalinity. The average PH level of ground water is 6.73 (neutral range). The PH level of ground water in 22 other areas which are randomly selected excluding the areas for this study ranges between neutral and weak alkalinity. The average PH level is 7.7(weak alkalinity range). Although many studies show that water of alkalinity is beneficial to health, this study result surprizingly doesn't match them.
The villages are mainly located at well-drained area with higher elevation, some at seasides, or at riverside.
The residents rely on the produce growing at their living areas as their main food source. Their main foods are soy bean paste soups and garlic of which caloric level is low, examined by the medical specialists.
Although the residents have lived poorly depending barren agricultural land, they have lived positively and have been friendly with their neighbours. They are accustomed to living mood of respecting the elders especially. They have worked very diligently all day long.
The whole areas have no environmental pollution. There are no humus soils by organic decomposition in the areas due to good draining.
Despite the poorly living condition, the traditionally comfortable surroundings allowed the residents to enjoy longevity. Recently, however, this aptitude been changed. As many surveyors and tourists have visited the areas which mass media report interestingly, outer different culture has penetrated into their living mode and has often had conflict with their own one. After all, their traditional value has gradually been disrupted by the outer culture of material civilization. Recently, some healthy elders are sometimes reported to have died suddenly in the areas. It is presumed that this happened as the refusal to material civilization has destructed their existing spiritual culture and has broken their life rhythms.
The comfortable and beautiful landscape of mountain valleys, riversides and seashores is valuable in itself and further helps the residents to have accumulate generous and friendly tempers with physical and mental stability, which is base of the attitude of respecting the elders especially.
They have learned to cooperate with their neighbours to increase productivity at the poor agricultural land. They have also worked diligently and could continue to lead their house-hold economy of self support and sufficiency.
As the soils of the long life villages are thin and composed of gravel and rock, they harvested the crops such as millet, beans, maize, potato, radish, garlic, and red pepper which grow better in the well drained agricultural lands than in the soils with high specific retention. These crops became the only food sources which provided the residents with basic nutritions. As many study results of international conference and a lot of treatises verify that beans and maize contain many quantities of constituents useful to health, this study for the 13 long-life villages also shows the beans and maize became major cause of longevity of their residents.
