사회적 자본의 이중성에 대한 사례연구 - 퍼트넘과 부르디외의 이론을 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 로컬 커뮤니티에서 사회적 자본이 협력과 신뢰를 증진시키는 긍정적 자원으로 작용함과 동시에, 배제와 위계를 재생산하는 구조적 기제로 작 동할 수 있다는 이중적 성격을 밝히고자 한다. 이를 위해 퍼트넘의 공동체 협 력 이론과 부르디외의 자본 이론을 이론적 틀로 설정하고, 경상남도 ○○군에 위치한 협동조합을 중심으로 질적 사례연구를 수행하였다. 반구조화된 인터뷰 와 문헌자료를 통해 수집한 자료는 귀납적 내용분석을 통해 참여 동기, 신뢰 구축, 권력 편중, 외부 연계, 사회적 자본의 양면성 등 다섯 가지 범주로 분석 되었다. 연구 결과, 사회적 자본은 주민 간 유대감과 협력의 기반이 되는 동시에, 문화적 배타성과 권력 집중, 외부자에 대한 소외로 이어질 수 있는 위험도 내포하고 있었다. 이러한 이중성은 로컬 커뮤니티의 리더십 성격, 포용성, 자원 지속성, 외부 연결망 관리에 따라 강화되거나 완화될 수 있음을 확인하였다. 본 연구는 사회적 자본을 통해 지역공동체의 역동성과 구조적 한계를 동시에 조망하고, 주민 주도 정책의 실천 가능성과 한계에 대한 이론적·실천적 함의를 제시한다.

This study explores the dual nature of social capital in local communities, wherein it functions both as a positive resource that fosters cooperation and trust, and as a structural mechanism that reproduces exclusion and hierarchy. Drawing on Putnam’s theory of community cooperation and Bourdieu’s theory of capital, this research employs a qualitative case study focused on a cooperative located in ○○ County, Gyeongsangnam-do, South Korea. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and documentary analysis, and analyzed using inductive content analysis. The findings were categorized into five themes: participation motivation, trust-building, power concentration, external linkages, and the ambivalence of social capital. The results reveal that while social capital strengthens bonds and cooperation among residents, it can also entail risks such as cultural exclusivity, centralized authority, and the marginalization of outsiders. This duality is found to be shaped by the nature of local leadership, inclusivity, resource sustainability, and the management of external networks. The study offers both theoretical and practical implications for understanding the dynamic potentials and structural limitations of social capital in local community development and citizen-led policy initiatives.
