동방 정교회와의 일치 운동에 대한 고찰 : Joint Catholic-Orthodox Commission의 문헌 "Ecclesial Communion, Conciliarity and Authority"을 중심으로 = A Study on the Ecumenical Movement with Orthodox Church Focusing on the "Ecclesial Communion, Conciliarity and Authority" of the Joint Catholic-Orthodox Commission

국문 초록 (Abstract)

1964년 로마가톨릭교회와 동방정교회는 상호파문을 철회했다. 그러나 분열 이후 양 교회 사이의 상처는 완전히 회복이 되지 못했다. 오늘날 로마가톨릭교회는 교회 쇄신과 성서와 성전에 대한 재조명을 통해 그리스도교인의 일치에 대해 큰 관심을 가지게 되었다. 이에 따라 로마가톨릭교회와 동방정교회 사이에는 ‘로마가톨릭교회와 동방정교회 사이의 신학적 대화를 위한 국제 공동 위원회’가 만들어졌다. 그리고 신학공동위원회는 최근 Ravenna문헌을 발표한다. 양 교회의 재일치를 위하여 신학적인 문제를 해결하기 위해 서로의 교리와 입장, 그리고 함께 공유하는 성서와 전통을 연구한 결과가 발표된 것이다. 본 논문은 Ravenna 문헌이 가지는 의미를 밝혀 보았다.
일치 운동 안에서 이 문헌의 위치를 알기 위해서는 3가지 작업이 필요하다. 하나는 로마가톨릭교회의 교도권에서 밝히는 일치 신학을 분명히 하는 것이다. 이를 통해 일치운동에 있어 로마가톨릭교회의 일치운동의 목적과 방향을 밝힐 수 있으며, 일치 운동에 있어 기본적인 토대를 찾을 수 있었다. 다음으로 로마가톨릭교회와 동방정교회 사이에 있었던 역사적 과정, 곧 분열의 역사와 분열 이후의 역사를 확인하는 것이다. 이 작업을 통해 분열의 원인을 확인하는 동시에, 분열 이후 양 교회의 입장을 밝힐 수 있었다. 이를 통해 역사적 과정 안에서 분열의 이유와 그 후에 생긴 새로운 문제점 및 해결된 사항들을 확인할 수 있으며, Ravenna 문헌이 가지는 역사적 의미를 더욱 명확히 할 수 있다. 마지막으로 Ravenna 문헌의 본문을 세세히 확인하는 작업이다. 문헌의 내용을 자세히 살핌으로써, 문헌이 가지는 구체적 의미를 밝히고 문헌을 통해 로마가톨릭교회와 동방정교회의 일치 운동 안에서 방향성을 예상할 수 있다.
논문의 주요 대상인 동방정교회는 참된 성사를 보존하고 사도성을 지니고 있기 때문에 개별교회이다. 그러나 동방정교회는 교황과의 친교가 완전히 회복되지 않았기 때문에 결함을 가졌다. 따라서 로마가톨릭교회는 그 교회들과 완전한 일치를 목표로 한다.
로마가톨릭교회와 동방정교회가 분열되게 된 이유는 다음과 같다. 분열의 원인은 정치적, 문화적 원인과 함께 신학적 견해 차이였다. 특히 Filioque 논쟁과 관련하여 사용하는 언어의 차이가 한 원인이 되었다. 라틴어와 희랍어 사이에 가지는 의미상의 차이점과 너무 먼 거리에 따른 서로간의 언어를 사용하지 못함에 따라서 상호간의 오해가 심해지게 되었다. 이 점은 이단의 도전에 대한 양 교회의 반응을 다르게 이끌었다.
공의회 문헌의 결정문에 대한 해석의 차이도 분열의 원이이 되엇다. Filioque 문제와 관련하여, 에페소 공의회와 칼케돈 공의회의 결정문에 따르면 니케아-콘스탄티노플 신경을 가감하거나 의미를 바꾸는 것은 금지되었다. 이에 따라 보편 공의회의 결정을 그대로 유지하는 것을 중요시했던 동방정교회는 Filioque의 첨가를 거부할 수 밖에 없었다.
분열에는 교계 이해의 차이도 있었다. 서로마제국의 멸망 후 가졌던 로마가톨릭교회와 동방정교회의 주변상황의 차이는 교황을 중심으로 하는 군주제적 체계와 콘스탄티노플, 알렉산드리아, 안티오키아, 예루살렘의 총대주교좌를 중심으로 집단지도체제의 특성을 가져온다. 이에 따라 고대의 5대 총대주교좌 사이의 서열에 대한 논쟁 역시 분열의 원인이 된다.

Ravenna 문헌을 직접적으로 다루기 전, 마지막으로 양 교회의 분열 이후의 역사를 통해 양 교회가 가지고 있는 입장을 분명히 알아보았다. 또한 분열 이후의 역사적 과정을 통해서 새로운 등장한 문제점인 공의회의 권위에 대한 입장의 차이, 교황의 수위권 문제에 대해 다루었다.
제2차 리옹공의회와 피렌체 공의회는 재일치를 목적으로 한 공의회였다. 이때 Filioque 문제에 대하여 서로 같은 의미를 다른 형식으로 표현했음을 인정했다. 그러나 이 결정은 서류상의 동의로 끝나고 말았다.
제2차 바티칸 공의회 이후 양 교회는 상호 개방성을 보여주었다. 이어서 상호파문을 철회하며 양 교회는 교회일치를 위해 신학적으로 대화하기 시작하였다. 비록 로마가톨릭교회의 일치운동의 방향이 언제나 로마가톨릭교회로 돌아와 친교를 회복하는 것임을 바뀌지 않았지만, 갈라진 교회들과 공동체들 안에서 성령의 활동을 찾으며 친교의 가능성을 열었다. 그러나 아직도 교황의 위치와 역할에 대해 상호간의 의견 차이와 교황의 무류성이 문제점으로 남는다.
이러한 상황에서 Ravenna문헌의 교의신학적 의미를 성찰하였다. 수용성의 문제에 있어서, 일치운동의 성격과 상호 개방을 통해 다양성에 대해 인정함으로써 비록 이 문헌이 신학위원회의 문헌일 뿐이지만 양 교회가 모두 수용할 가능성을 보여주었다.
다음으로 Filioque 논쟁에 대한 문제이다. 이에 대한 문제는 공의회 결정의 보편성에 대한 차원과 다양성에 대한 차원으로 다룰 수 있다. 우선 문헌이 밝히듯 공의회의 결정은 모든 시간과 장소에 연결되어 있기 때문에 보편적이다. 다만 그 결정이 각자의 전승에 따라 해석되기 때문에 다양한 차이성을 가진다. 문헌은 결국 Filioque의 문제에

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In the year 1964, the Roman Catholic and the Orthodox Church lifted mutual excommunication. However, the conflict between the two churches had not been resolved yet since the schism. Today, the Roman Catholic has got interested in unity of Christians more than ever, through renewal of the church and redefining of the Bible and sanctuary. Accordingly, the 'Joint International Commission for the Theological Dialogue between the Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church' has been constituted. And recently, the committee has released the Ravenna Document. In order to achieve unity and solve theological problems, the study results on the doctrines and standpoints of each church, and the Bible and traditions shared by each church was released. This paper has been designed to uncover the meaning of Ravenna Document.

In order to understand the position of this document within ecumenical movement, it is required to carry out three kinds of work. The first one is to clearly indicate the ecumenical theology clarified in the power of magisterium of the Roman Catholic church. In this manner, the purpose and direction of ecumenical movement of the Roman Catholic church could be identified, and the basic foundations of the ecumenical movement could be found out as well. And the next one was to identify the historical process between the Roman Catholic and the Orthodox Church, namely the schism history and the history after the schism. Through this work, it was possible to look into the reason of schism, and identify the standpoint of each church after the schism. And also, the reason of schism based on the historical process, and the new problems occurring after the schism and the matters that were solved were identified, resulting in clarifying the historical significance of Ravenna Document. The last thing was to check the test of Ravenna Document in detail. Based on the detailed examination of the document, it was possible to define the specific meanings of the document, and foresee the direction of ecumenical movement occurring between the Roman Catholic and the Orthodox Church.

The Orthodox Church, which was the main target of this thesis, is a separate church because they preserve the true sacrament and maintain the apostolicity. However, the Orthodox Church still remains defective as the relationship between the church and the Supreme Pontiff has not been recovered fully yet. Consequently, the Roman Catholic church sets up the goal to fully unify with the Orthodox Church.

The reason of schism between the Roman Catholic church and the Orthodox Church is as follows. The schism was caused by the difference in political and cultural reason, including the difference in theological views. Especially in association with the Filioque debate, the difference in language used in the regions became one the reasons. The semantic difference between Latin and Greek and the impossibility of using each other's language due to the long distance resulted in a severe misunderstanding between each other. This led the response of each church to the challenge from heresy to different directions.

The difference in interpretation of the Resolution of the Ecumenical Council became one of the reason of schism. According to the resolution of Council of Ephesos and the Council of Chalcedon in relation to the Filioque problems, addition and subtraction to the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed or any change in the creed was prohibited. Accordingly, the Orthodox Church, which took serious view of maintaining the universal decision of the council as it was could not but refuse to add the Filioque.

In a sense, the difference in understanding of hierarchy was involved in the schism. The difference in surrounding situation of the Roman Catholic and the Orthodox Church after the Fall of the Western Roman Empire brought about the monarchial system centered on the Pope and the characteristics of collective leadership concentrated on the Patriarch of Constantinople, Alexandria, Antiochia and Jerusalem. Accordingly, the debate on the rank among 5 patriarchs became ofe of the causes of schism.

Before getting into the Ravenna Document directly, as the final stage, the positions taken by both churches were investigated through the history after the schism. And also, by looking into the historical process after the schism, the difference in stand against the authority of ecumenical councils, which had emerged as new problems, and the problem of papal primacy were dealt with.
The 2nd Council of Lyon and the Council of Firenze were aimed at reunification. At this time, it was recognized that the same meaning concerned with a problem of Filioque controversy had been expressed in different forms. However, the decision had just remained as an agreement on the document.

After the 2nd Vatican Council, both churches showed mutual openness. And then they lifted the lifted mutual excommunication to begin the theological conversation for the sake of unity. Although the direction of ecumenical movement of the Roman Catholic, in which they wanted the Orthodox Church come back to them and recover the fellowship, has never changed, both side could open up infinite possibilities of fellowship and activities of Holy Spirit in the separate churches and communities. However, the mutual difference in opinions about the position and role of the Poe and the Papal infallibility remain as issues.

In such situations, the dogmatic theological meaning of Ravenna Document has been contemplated. As for the issues concerned with embracement, it was found out that there is a possibility that both churches may accept the document by recognizing the diversity through the characteristics of ecumenical movement and mutual openness, though the document is nothing but a document constituted by the theology committee.
