‘에코맘’의 삶과 의미에 관한 질적 사례 연구 = A qualitative case study on the life and the significance of ‘EcoMom’

Recently, the number of EcoMoms, mothers who practice an ecological lifestyle at home, is increasing globally. In Korea, however, there are few studies about the values that EcoMoms pursue and how they live in reality. The purpose of this study is to figure out an EcoMom's life and its significance in Korea. This study adopted qualitative case study as a research method in which in-depth interviews were carried out with seven informants through purposive sampling. Study results show that EcoMoms pursue ecological values: leading an intentionally humble life and living together with other people and life forms, beyond pursuing the well-being of themselves and their families. The ecological values, emerging from the individual 'I,' were exercised by EcoMoms at home as 'housewives and moms' and extended to society as 'citizens.' EcoMoms are generally satisfied with their lives but sometimes suffer from doubts and mental fatigue, conflicts and frustration, and disappointment and isolation at home and society as well as at an individual level. However, they have developed as flexible and mature EcoMoms through reflection. Genuine EcoMoms practice ecological values not only individually but also at home and in society in general. EcoMoms are socially meaningful in that they are cornerstones for an ecological society. Furthermore, they are also meaningful in the perspective of environmental education since they show the importance of values and reflections in becoming environmentally-benign people that environmental education aims to raise.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

최근 세계적으로 가정에서 생태적인 삶을 실천하는 주부들이란 의미의 에코맘들이 늘어나고 있다. 하지만 에코맘들이 어떤 가치를 지향하며 어떻게 삶을 살아가고 있는지에 대한 연구는 한국 사회에 미흡한 실정이다. 이 연구에서는 에코맘의 삶과 그 의미를 파악하는 것을 목적으로 하여 질적 사례연구를 수행하였다. 목적적 표본추출방법을 통해 전형적인 에코맘 일곱 명을 제보자로 선정한 후 심층면접을 실시하였다. 연구 결과 에코맘은 흔히 이해되듯이 나와 가족의 건강과 안전을 추구하는 웰빙족에 머무르지 않고 의식적으로 소박한 삶을 살면서 더불어 잘 살아야 한다는 생태주의적 가치를 지향하는데 개인 차원의 ‘나’에서 출발한 이러한 가치를 ‘주부·엄마’로서 가정 영역에 실천하며 ‘시민’으로서 사회적 차원으로 확장해 나갔다. 에코맘은 대체로 스스로 만족하는 삶을 살고 있지만, 때때로 생태주의적 가치를 실천하는 데 있어서 개인 차원은 물론 가정과 사회에서 회의와 피로감, 갈등과 좌절감, 실망과 고립을 겪기도 하였다. 그러나 이들은 지속적인 성찰과 반성을 통해 더욱 유연하고 성숙한 에코맘으로 진화하였다. 진정한 에코맘은 생태주의적 가치를 개인과 가정의 영역을 넘어 사회에서도 실천하는 사람이다. 에코맘은 생태사회를 실현해나가는 데 초석이 될 수 있다는 점에서 사회적으로 의미 있는 존재이며, 생태주의적 가치를 내면화하고 성찰적 자세를 가지는 것이 중요하다는 사실을 보여줌으로써 환경교육이 가야할 방향을 제시해주고 있다는 점에서 환경교육적으로도 의미 있는 존재다.
