The Purpose of this study is to analyze the consistency of diverse indexes of overweight and to find the determinants of weight control behavior. The 550 college female students at one univerisity were selected using systematic stratified random sampling technique and were interviewed by questionnaire survey. And, in order to get the acurate information on their physical condition, the weight, height, and PBF(Percent Body Fat) were measured.
This study used divere indexes of overweight : 1) subjective indexes (other-rated as well as self-rated degree of overweight) 2) objective indexes (BMI as well as PBF). Crosstabulating subjective index with objective index showed that respondents' self perception on their weight reflected the objective condition relatively well. However, there were some 42% of respondents who had wrong perception. The inconsistency found between BMI and PBF raised a question on the validity of so-called `objective' index of overweight.
Using the subjective as well as objective index, the respondents were regrouped into the following three : 1) subjectively as well as objectively overweight : 2) objectively overweight/subjectively normal: 3) subjectively as well as objectively normal. Using χ^2 test and ANOVA, we found that the proportion of respondents who tried weight control as well as the number of weight control methods were highest in subjectively/objectively overweighted group. However, femininity turned out not to be related to weight control behavior.
