The Issues and Self-Perceptions of Korean Early Study-Abroad Undergraduates in the U.S.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이문우. 2010. 6. 30. 미국 내 조기유학 경험을 가진 한국인 대학생들의당면 문제와 자의식. 이중언어학 43, 301-324. 본 연구는 영어조기교육 열풍과 더불어 점점 더 그 수가 늘고 있는 조기유학생들의 자의식을 그들의목소리를 바탕으로 제시하는 것을 연구목적으로 한다. 제한된 수의 조기유학생들의 예화들을 바탕으로 한 기존의 담론들과는 달리, 본 연구는 22명의 조기유학경험을 가지고 현재 미국 대학교에 재학 중인 한국인 대학생들을 대상으로 심층 인터뷰와 체계적인 데이터 구성방식으로 (기반이론,Grounded Theory) 그들이 조기유학생으로서 가지고 있는 당면 문제와 나아가 그들의 자의식까지 제시하고 있다. 한국에서 태어나 부모와 일찍이떨어져 미국에서 자라온 연구 참가자들은 영어권 환경에서 영어를 배우는것이 단순히 한국어, 한국인 정체성에 영어를 덧입히는 것이 아니라는 것을 극명히 보여준다. 조기유학 경험은 그들로 하여금 영어와 한국어, 영어권 문화와 한국어권 문화의 중간지점에서 경계성 정체성 (Borderlands Identity)을 가지게 하였다. 본 연구는 자녀의 조기유학을 고려하고 있는 다수의 한국인 학부모들에게 한국인 조기유학생들의 실상을 있는 그대로 알려줌으로써 그들이 자녀를 위한 결정을 내릴 때 도움을 줄 있을 것으로 본다. 또한, 급격하게 늘어나고 있는 한국인 조기유학생들을 가르쳐야하는미국인 교육자들에게도 독특한 배경을 가진 이들을 포용할 수 있는 교실내 커리큘럼과 나아가 제2언어학습자들을 위한 정책을 수립하는 데에도일조를 할 수 있을 것이라고 기대된다.
