유대인 박물관에 나타난 헤테로토피아적 공간 특성 연구 = Study on the Characteristics of Heterotopia in the Jewish Museum

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 유대인 박물관을 대상으로 헤테로토피아(heterotopia) 개념을 적용하여 기억·공간·서사의 상호작용 구조를 분석하는 데 목적이 있다. 유대인 박물관은 홀로코스트와 디아스포라의 역사적 맥락 속에서 단순한 전시기관을 넘어, 감각적 체험과 서사적 재구성을 통해 과거의 기억을 현재적 경험으로 환기하는 복합적 기억 공간으로 기능해 왔다. 이에 본 연구는 푸코의 헤테로토피아 이론을 기억문화 및 감각적 실천의 관점에서 재구조화하여 감각적 자극성, 경계적 유동성, 몰입적 경험성, 시간적 중첩성, 문화적 혼종성, 기억의 응축성, 전복적 내러티브성, 상징적 반전성, 해석의 다층성 등 아홉 가지 분석틀을 도출하였다. 이를 바탕으로 주요 유대인 박물관을 대상으로 건축·전시·도시 맥락을 통합적으로 분석하였다.
분석 결과, 유대인 박물관은 감각적 장치를 통해 기억을 공간화하고, 과거와 현재를 중첩시키며, 문화적 혼종성과 전복적 서사를 통해 기존의 역사 해석을 재구성하는 헤테로토피아적 특성을 보였다. 또한 이들 공간은 단일한 해석을 강요하지 않고 관람자의 경험·배경·관점을 적극적으로 수용하는 다층적 해석 구조를 형성함으로써, 기억의 다양성과 복수성을 드러내는 열린 장(場)으로 기능하였다.
본 연구의 기대효과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 유대인 박물관을 매개로 헤테로토피아 개념을 공간 분석의 실천적 도구로 확장함으로써, 기억 건축 연구에 적용 가능한 새로운 해석틀을 제시하였다. 둘째, 감각적·시간적·문화적 층위가 결합된 박물관 설계 전략을 제안함으로써, 향후 기념공간·교육공간·복합문화시설 등 다양한 건축 유형에서 활용 가능한 공간 설계의 방향성을 제공한다. 셋째, 유대인 박물관의 공통성과 차이를 헤테로토피아 관점에서 비교함으로써, 현대 박물관이 수행해야 할 사회적 역할—기억의 보존뿐 아니라 치유·성찰·공존의 플랫폼—을 재정의하는 데 기여한다. 궁극적으로 본 연구는 유대인 박물관을 ‘기억·정체성·감각이 교차하는 현대적 헤테로토피아’로 규정하며, 기억 기반 공간 연구의 학술적 확장과 실무적 적용 가능성을 동시에 제시한다.

This study examines Jewish museums through the lens of heterotopia, analyzing the spatial interplay of memory, narrative, and sensory experience. As institutions rooted in the traumatic histories of the Holocaust and the Jewish diaspora, Jewish museums function not merely as exhibition venues but as complex memory spaces that transform historical events into embodied, contemporary experiences. Reinterpreting Michel Foucault’s concept of heterotopia within the frameworks of memory studies and sensory perception, this research establishes nine analytical criteria—sensory stimulativity, boundary fluidity, immersive experientiality, temporal overlapping, cultural hybridity, condensation of memory, subversive narrativity, symbolic inversion, and interpretive multiplicity. These criteria are applied to major cases including the Jewish Museum Berlin, POLIN Museum, Yad Vashem Holocaust History Museum, and Mémorial de la Shoah, integrating architectural, exhibitional, and urban-contextual readings.
The analysis reveals that Jewish museums spatialize memory through sensory strategies, juxtapose past and present via temporal layering, and reconstruct historical meaning through cultural hybridity and subversive narrative structures. Furthermore, these museums operate as open interpretive fields that embrace visitors’ diverse backgrounds, perceptions, and emotional responses, thereby revealing the multiplicity and complexity of collective memory.
The expected contributions of this study are threefold. First, by employing heterotopia as an operative analytical tool, the research proposes a new theoretical framework for understanding memory-based architecture and its spatial mechanisms. Second, by identifying the intertwined sensory, temporal, and cultural layers of museum space, the study offers practical design insights applicable to memorials, educational spaces, and contemporary cultural institutions. Third, by comparing the shared and divergent characteristics of Jewish museums across regional and historical contexts, the research redefines the contemporary museum as a platform for remembrance, reflection, healing, and coexistence. Ultimately, this study positions Jewish museums as modern heterotopias where memory, identity, and sensory experience converge, contributing both academically and practically to the expanding discourse on memory-driven spatial design.
