개항기 역관(譯官) 김경수(金景遂)의 대외인식(對外認識) -『공보초략(公報抄略)』을 중심으로- = The Perception about Foreign Countries by Kim Kyeongsu, an Interpreter, during the Period of Opening of Ports

국문 초록 (Abstract)

金景遂(1818~?)는 개항을 전후한 시기에 활동하였던 漢語譯官이었다. 김경수는 역관 집안 출신이라는 성장 배경과 자신의 사행경험을 통해, 청 중심의 동아시아 질서가 무너지고 서양이 그 자리를 대신하던 현실을 일찍부터 간파하고 있었다. 이에 서양을 인정하는 사유방식의 변화를 경험하면서, 그는 서양과의 통교 가능성을 열어두는 한편, 자연스럽게 富國에도 관심을 갖게 되었다. 이후 六橋詩社 활동과 강위와의 만남을 통해 그는 개국의 필요성과 富國에 대한 인식을 더욱 발전시켜 나가고, 서구문물의 수용에 우호적인 태도를 보였던 동인들과도 활발하게 교유하게 되었다. 『공보초략』은 1879년 김경수에 의해 간행된 서적이었다. 이 서적은 서양에 대한 정보를 종합적으로 소개한 청나라의 『교회신보』와 『만국공보』에서 조선에 도움이 될 만한 항목들을 선별하여 게재한 것이었다. 이 책의 간행 목적은 조선이 처한 국제적 현실을 극복하기 위한 內修外攘에 두고 있었다. 그러나 그는 배타적인 外攘을 주장한 것은 아니며, 오히려 부국강병을 위해 外攘의 대상이 되어야 할 서양을 통해 문물을 받아들이고 배워야 할 것을 강조하였다. 이를 위해 김경수는 『공보초략』을 통하여 청과 조선의 현실을 진단하고 서양과 일본을 소개하였다. 이미 부강한 서양과, 부강한 서양의 모방에 성공한 일본의 현실을 조선에 적극 알리려 하였던 것이다. 그리고 김경수는 서양의 다양한 문물들 특히 자연과학, 기술과 관련된 면들을 소개하였다. 이를 통하여 조선인에게는 새로운 과학기술에 대한 호기심을 충족시켜 주면서도 서양에서 발달하고 있는 문물에 대한 지식정보를 제공해 주는 역할을 하였다. 1870년대 전반까지도 조선 내에서는 서양화에 대한 주장이 쉽게 수용될 수 있는 상황은 아니었다. 그러나 그는 1880년대 서양 문물 수용 논의가 본격화되기 이전에 이미 東道에 기반한 서구문물의 수용을 주장하면서, 당시 서양을 알려는 조선인들의 근대 서양 지식의 획득에 크게 기여하였던 것으로 평가될 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Kim Kyeongsu was an official interpreter who had worked at the period of Opening of Ports. He earlier saw through the situation when the Western occupied the international order instead of Q`ing which was centered on the Eastern Asia at that time, but it was collapsed. He experienced the change of thought, tried the possibility of cultural exchange with the Western, and concerned about a national wealth. After that, he developed to realize the necessity of opening the country to oversea and the national wealth more than before, kept actually company who had friendly the attitude of accepting the western culture. Gongbochoryak(公報抄略) was the book which was published by Kim Kyeongsu in 1879. This book was that Gyohoisinbo(敎會新報) and Mangukgongbo(萬國公報), which was major media introduced the information of Western in Q`ing, selected items to help Joseon and described them. They introduced the western situation and the western civilization mostly from 1869 to 1876. The purpose published this book was to overcome the international reality which Joseon encountered at that time. He described his opinions that it was a wise choice that Q`ing had better have a friendly relationship with the Western if Q`ing had no practical power, after he saw Beijing`s Accident in Q`ing. He insisted that Joseon should plan to enhance the national prosperity and defense rather than to defeat the Western countries unconditionally. Therefore, He emphasized that Joseon had to accept the civilization through Western which would be the object to be defeated and to learn it. For this purpose, Kim Kyeongsu introduced the reality of Western and Japan through Gongbochoryak(公報抄略). He tried to inform actively Joseon of the success of Japan which copied the Western style. And he also introduced various Western civilization, specially about the natural science and technology. He played a role to inform Joseon people of knowledge and information on the Western civilization to be developed with satisfying the curiosity about new scientific technology. It made his position to accept the Western civilization that was still the subject to be argued in Joseon at that time. Western painting was not to be accepted easily until the early 1890. But he emphasized to accept the Western civilization based on Eastern way through Gongbochoryak(公報抄略). He had the understanding on foreign countries to consider two things which Joseon had not to fall behind the international order which was centered on the Western.
