      This study aims to criticize the culture of old age and death in modern society and to analyze and reconstruct the arguments of two death theorists who are currently lively active in Germany in order to explore starting points of new cultures of old age and death. Chapter 1 investigates and criticizes how old people in modern society, where culture of youth and life is dominant and capitalistic consume media encourages the desire for control and dominance over the body, stepped back and degraded into branded beings and how old age also degenerated into dark ages. Chapter 2 reconstructs and analyzes the central claims of death theorists Petra Gehring and Thomas Rentsch who will be the starting point of a new culture for the recovery of dignity of old age and symbolism of death. In a broad sense, those two theorists share common the orientation of argument, but only differ in specific arguments, whereby this difference is rather in a sense of supplementation than exclusion. One of the common ground of them is the criticism towards the distorted culture of old age and death by the control of bio-power in the modern era, and the other is the disclosure of the constructive meaning of finitude as symbol of death and the thereby constructed need for the pursuit of happiness. What they distinguish from each other is that Gehring did not link old age with death and did not give old age any specialty, whereas Rentsch gave old age a special status of a period where one becomes oneself. Also on the position towards death, Gehring defines death as encounter and claims that death is not a subject to value judgments of good and bad, and in this way awakens the preciousness of life now and here. In contrast, Rentsch constructs the meaning of solidarity and communication through the existential limit that finitude of death implicates, and links it with good death. Chapter 3 investigates how culture of death has changes from ancient to modern times and analyzes the content and process of change of `culture of liberation through death`, `medicalization of dying and bio-power`, and `new culture of death from the viewpoint of life`s meaning construction`. What I thereby try to show is the prospect of an old, but new culture of old age and death that will open the world of human dignity.
