This study aims to compare behavioral characteristics of the delinquent group of juveniles and the ordinary group of juveniles which based on the sense of self-confidence, self-satisfaction, self-esteem, self-control and the level of needs, emotional inaptness, the sense of instability, nervousness and escape, social maturity, the cognition of social regulations, social maturity and the tendency of anti-society, the sense of attachment, the tendency of independence and attachment, and human relations, home, school and society.
This study intends to give some help to guide problem children in a school and delinquent juveniles in a community neighborhood, and to offer the important informations to correctional institutions which instruct delinquent juveniles.
To achieve the study objective, the research hypotheses were formulated as follows:
<Hypothesis 1> There will be significant differences on the sense of self-confidence, self-satisfaction, self-esteem, self-control and the level of needs, between the delinquent group of juveniles and the ordinary group of .juveniles, and the delinquent group of juveniles will show the less sense of self confidence.
<Hypothesis 2> There will be significant differences on the status of emotional inaptness, the sense of instability, nervousness and escape, between the delinquent group of juveniles and the ordinary group of juveniles, and the delinquent group of juveniles will show the more emotional inaptness.
<Hypothesis 3> There will be significant differences on the sense of attachment, independence and attachment between the two groups, and the delinquent group of juveniles will show the less sense of attachment
<Hypothesis 4> There will be significant differences on the social maturity, the cognition of social regulations, social maturity and the symptom of antiU society between the two groups, and the ordinary group of juveniles will show more tendency for the cognition of social regulations cind social maturity, on the other hand, the delinquent group of juveniles will show more tendency for the symptom of anti-society.
UHypothesis 5> There will be significant differences on the human relations, home, school and society, and the delinquent group of juveniles will show less satisfactory human relations.
The subjects of the study consist of 210 juveniles under protection in Chun-chon Juvenile training school as a delinquent group of juveniles and 215 second-year students of Chun-chon junior high school as a ordinary yroup of juveniles.
The instrument of measurement in this study was the Diagnostic Examination for Living Guidance, which was invented by Kim, Haksoo & Lee, Eunsoo(1975) to verify behavioral characteristics of junior high school students, the questionnaire consists of 188 questions in total which include 48 of the sense of self-confidence, 44 of the sense of emotional instability, 24 of the sense of attachment, 36 of social maturity and .36 of human relations.
To verify the reliability, 60 juveniles of each group were questioned one week after the first examination and reliable results, .80 - .92, came out as the reliability of reexamination
The t-test was used to test the research hypotheses
Summary of the results of hypotheses test are as follows :
First, there were no differences between the two groups for the self-satisfaction but self-esteem, self-control and the degree of needs had significant differences and the ordinary group of juveniles showed the higher degrees than the delinquent group of juveniles did in the part of comparitive examination for the sense of self-confidence, so the Hypothesis 1 was supported in general.
Second, there were no differences between the two groups for the sense of instability but the tendency of nervousness and escape had significant differences and the delinquent group of juveniles showed the higher degree of escape and nervousness in the part of emotional instability, so the Hypothesis 2 was supported partially.
Third, there were no differences for the sense of independence but the sense of attachment had significant differences between the two groups and the ordinary group of juveniles had the higher sense of attachment in the part of the sense of attachment, so the Hypothesis 3 was supported partially.
Fourth, there were no differences between the two groups for the social maturity but the cognition of social regulations and the symptom of anti-society had significant differences between the two groups and that the ordinary group of juveniles had the higher cognition degree of social regulation and the delinquent group of juveniles showed the higher degree for the tendency of anti-society in the part of social maturity, so the Hypothesis 4 was supported partially.
Fifth, there were significant differences between the two groups, and the ordinary group of juveniles had the higher degree of satisfactory human relations than the delinquent group of juveniles did in the part of compahtive examination for human relations, home, school and society, so the Hypothesis 5 was supported as a whole.
