The purpose of this study was to examine the roles of children's posttraumatic symptoms on the relationship between the experience of childhood physical abuse and reactive aggression. First, the subjects of 2,516 students in the fifth and sixth grade. The frequency of physical abuse of these subjects suffered from their own parents or guardians for the past year was investigated. Among them, 53 children who had reported experiencing clinically severe physical abuse and 50 children who had reported no experiences of physical abuse were selected and the two groups were compared for posttraumatic symptoms and reactive aggression. Next, the mediation effect of posttraumatic symptoms between physical abuse experience and reactive aggression was investigated using data obtained from 1,197 elementary school students who met the specific criteria for physical abuse. The results indicated that children's experience of physical abuse directly affected their reactive aggression, and posttraumatic symptoms also served as mediators for the relationship between physical abuse and reactive aggression. Based on these findings, effective intervention strategies were discussed for decreasing reactive aggression among physically abused children. The implications of decreasing posttraumatic symptoms were also emphasized.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 아동기의 신체적 학대경험 실태를 파악하고, 신체적 학대 경험과 반응적 공격성과의 관계에서 외상후 증상의 매개효과를 검증하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 우리나라 초등학교 5, 6학년에 재학 중인 아동 2,516명을 대상으로 자기보고식 설문을 통해 지난 1년간 부모 및 보호자로부터 경험한 신체적 학대 실태를 조사하였다. 그리고 이들 중 임상적 수준에서 심각한 아동학대를 경험한 것으로 보고한 아동 53명과 학대를 전혀 경험하지 않은 것으로 보고한 아동 50명을 선정하여 두 집단 간에 외상후 증상 수준과 반응적 공격성 수준을 비교하였다. 다음으로, 연구자가 정한 기준을 충족하는 1,197명의 아동 자료를 사용하여 아동기 신체적 학대 경험이 반응적 공격성으로 가는 경로에서 외상후 증상의 매개효과를 검증하였다. 그 결과, 아동기의 신체적 학대 경험은 반응적 공격성에 직접 영향을 미칠 뿐만 아니라, 외상후 증상의 매개를 통해 간접적으로도 반응적 공격성을 야기할 수 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이와 같은 결과를 바탕으로 아동기 신체적 학대 경험에 따른 반응적 공격성 문제를 감소시키기 위해 필요한 점들과 특히, 외상후 증상 감소의 중요성에 대해 논의하였다.
