This study discussed Chusa and Baekpa’s perception of Ganhwaseon and the significance of Chusa and Baekpa’s Seon Debate, focusing on the positions of Chusa, who pursued historical research and Empirical tradition, and Baekpa, who was faithful to traditional interpretation. To this end, first, Chusa’s view of learning and Buddhism was examined through his life. Chusa tried an objective approach to the study of sutras, epigraphs, art, and Buddhist studies, with the attitude of research on Empirical tradition. He also had a deep understanding of Buddhism, especially in affirming both Confucianism and Buddhism, and took an attitude of reconciling them. Next, the significance of Chusa and Baekpa’s Debate on Seon was discussed. Through his criticism of Baekpa, Chusa raised the issue that Seon Buddhism at the time had to be reviewed through history and facts, not experience and tradition. In particular, in the controversy over Seon with the Baekpa, he openly criticized the issue of Seon, which was claimed by the Baekpa at the time, based on the historical research point of view. Lastly, Chusa’s perception of Ganhwaseon was examined. Chusa not only criticized Ganhwaseon again by using the terms that Dahui Zonggao criticized Silent-Penetrate Seon, but also said that the Gongan itself used in Ganhwaseon was a meaningless word without any content. Overall, Chusa’s critical view of Seon study was about how to position Seon in the reality of the time through questions such as ‘What is Seon study?’, ‘What is the essence of Seon study?’, and ‘What is Ganhwaseon?’ In particular, regardless of the outcome of the debate, it is significant in that it shows a new form of debate that corresponds to the pioneering of historical methodology and philosophical hermeneutics about 110 years before the controversy over the study of Seon study between Hushi and D. T. Suzuki.
