WonPyo(元表, 670?~760?) was one of the Buddhist Pilgrimage who visited India in the late 7th century of the Unified Silla Period. He traveled to India via the Maritime Silk Road through southern China, Srivijaya(Sumatra), and Sri Lanka. And he was able to go to Kohtan(和田, 于闐), where Avataṃsaka Sūtra was organized. Finally, he obtained the Avataṃsaka Sūtra in an 80-volume set. Historically, the Avataṃsaka Sūtra(Flower Garland Sutra) has been translated into Chinese twice. The first version was completed by Buddhabhadra in year 420 which contained 60 scrolls. The second version was completed by Śikṣānanda in year 699 containing 80 scrolls with 39 chapters.
According to the records of Samsanji(『三山志』), Songgoseungjeon(『宋高僧傳』), Borimsasajeukgi(「新罗国武州迦智山宝林寺事蹟记」), Won Pyo(元表) traveled to China, India and the Western Regions(西域) during year 684~705 where he obtained Avataṃsaka Sūtra in 80 scrolls in Sanskrit dialect. He went to Zhītí(支提, caitya) mountain, Fujian province(福建) which is located on the southeast coast of mainland China. He resided there for 50 years as a superior monk. WonPyo returned to Silla in year 755. He also founded temple Cheon Gwan(天冠寺) which is located on Mt. Cheon Gwan(天冠山) Jangheung. But so far, most scholars claimed that WonPyo started his spiritual journey in the middle of 8th century. Therefore I tried to learn about his life, spiritual journey, activity as a monk, and so forth. I think he introduced and popularized the Tiānguān Bodhisattva faith based on the Drumakinnararājaparipṛcchā Sūtra(大樹緊那羅王所問經) at Mt. Cheongwan in Silla.
