The purpose of this study is to find a teaching method that can make learners effectively study literary works and ruminate their literary values and significances beyond traditional text analysis. Here we propose an alternative to the traditional teaching method using <Tokki-jeon> and Theatre Education.
<Tokki-jeon> is one of the most widely-known Korean classical literature. <Tokki-jeon>, which captures the conflicts between ruling and subjugated classes in Late Joseon period, has various literary features such as figures, spaces, endings of its different versions, themes and so on. However, teaching with text analysis limits fully understanding its ample literary contents.
In this paper, we show that Theatre Education overcomes such limit and is thus an effective way of teaching the literary features of <Tokki-jeon>. In addition to text analysis, learners write drama scripts of <Tokki-jeon> by themselves and become one of the characters. We expect that this shall lead to a better understanding of the characters in <Tokki-jeon>. Also, they can grasp the relationship of underwater palace and land by moving between the theatrical sets of two different spaces on stage. To enhance the comprehension of the different versions of <Tokki-jeon>, we recommend them to write the drama scripts based on the endings of its different versions. We believe that the process of modernizing and reproducing one of the renowned classical literature gives them a chance to practice and exercise their imagination.
In chapter I, we define the problem of teaching Korean classical literature and consider Theatre Education as its solution. We mainly cover the teaching method of <Tokki-jeon>, one of the classical works in Korean classical literature, with Theatre Education and reviews the previous studies. In chapter II, we introduce the definition, types and teaching and learning models of Theatre Education to help understanding Theatre Education itself. In chapter III, we analyze the educational characteristics of <Tokki-jeon> and classify them into interior and exterior features. Through the analysis of the curriculums and textbooks about <Tokki-jeon>, we suggest its lesson plan with Theatre Education to teach the aforementioned features effectively. Lastly, in chapter IV, we point out the expected effects of teaching <Tokki-jeon> with Theatre Education.
Teaching Korean classical literature with Theatre Education eventually embodies learner-centered education and is an effective alternative to the traditional teaching method with text analysis. Therefore, we adopted Theatre Education to teach <Tokki-jeon>, which makes learners understand its literary values and significances more effectively.
