This study examines the institutional characteristics and social functions of Islamic law as applied in Thailand’s four southern provinces—Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, and Satun—and analyzes its impact on the formation of Muslim identity in the region. Within Thailand’s unified legal system, the exceptional recognition of Islamic family and inheritance law has functioned not merely as a religious norm but as a public framework organizing everyday life. Drawing on the theoretical framework of legal pluralism, this study demonstrates that Muslim identity in southern Thailand is not a fixed tradition but a processual identity continuously reconstructed through the coexistence and interaction of state law and religious law. By doing so, the study argues for reinterpreting the southern issue beyond the lenses of security or separatism, emphasizing instead the importance of law, institutions, and cultural recognition.
