In light of current enthusiasm in contextual approaches to the Old Testament, this article, divided into three main components, focuses on the narratives of the Noachic Deluge(Gen. 6-9). First, Eblaite(one), Sumerian(three), Akkadian(four), Greek(ond), Apocrypha(two), and Pseudepigrapha(four) texts are diachronically and synchronically analyzed. Synchronically it discusses the pre-creation world, the cause and countermeasure of the Deluge, name analysis of the Deluge heroes, and the procedures and results of the Deluge, including the similarities and differences between Mesopotamian texts and the Biblical ones. Secondly, literary-theological connections of Genesis 6-9 with the primeval history (Gen. 1-11) are variously explained. Lastly, biblical theological significances of the Noachic Deluge with respect to the eschatology are proposed as a sermon based upon Ⅱ Peter 3:1-14.
