The purpose of this study is to evaluate the core potato-growing regions in Kangwon-Do and their geographical features. For this study, I researched which location potato-growing regions in Kangwon Province would be occupied in Korea, and divided the study areas into four periods: accounted a location quotients was based on the potato-growing regions, made a map, and then found the core potato-growing regions. After considering the geographical factors of the study areas and the core potato-growing regions, I studied how to form the core potato-growing regions and their features. The summary follows: 1. The core potato-growing regions in Kangwon-Do are highlands and middle highlands of Mt. Taebaek. That is to say, the regions are eight regions; Nae-Myeon in Hongchon Gun, Bongpyeong-Myeon·Yongpyeong-Myeon·Jinbu-Myeon·Doam-Myeon in Pyongchang Gun, Wangsan-Myeon in Kangnung Si, Hajang-Myeon in Samchok Si, in Taebaek Si. According to change of potato-growing environment, the areas which might be the core potato-growing regions are thirteen regions; Ganseong-Eub·Toseong-Myeon in Kosong Gun, Ganghyeon-Myeon·Hyeonbuk-Myeon in Yangyang Gun, Jumunjin-Eub·Yeongog-Myeon·Sacheon-Myeon·Seongsan-Myeon·Gangdong-Myeon in Kangnung Si, Bug-Myeon·Limgye-Myeon·Sabug-Eub in Kohan-Eub in Jeongseon Gun. 2. The study areas and the core potato-growing regions have a natural and cultural environment which is suitable for growing potatoes. High-cool lands agriculture area has been spreaded widely thanks to highlands more 800 meters above the sea level, middle highlands more 600 meters above the sea level, and hills slope as well as cool climate in summer. Also enough precipitation at the potato growth period and cool and dry climate at the harvest are good conditions for potato growth. And the potato-growing technique using the slash and burn method of agriculture has been extended all study areas. In addition, the potato growing institute which is organized by the central and local government and an agricultural association have supported potato-growing farm households actively. Highway opening, new national roads, and paving roads improved potato-growing conditions and were convenient to market potatoes. 3. According to potato-growing regions, the amount of producing potatoes, the number of potato-growing farm households, and the size of potato-growing regions by the one farm household, the potato-growing in Kangwon Province wins the first position in Korea.
