대한제국기에 있어서 ‘기생(妓生)’과 ‘삼패(三牌)’의 개념적 구분에 관한 연구－ ‘기생(妓生)’과 ‘삼패(三牌)’의 ‘법적․정책적․사회적 속성’과 개념적 차이 = A Study on Conceptual Distinction Between Gisaeng and Sampae during Korean Empire Period - Focusing on Legal, Institutional, and Social Attribute of Gisaeng and Sampae and Conceptual Difference

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study tried to include articles and materials about “Gisaeng” and “Sampae” during theKorean Empire Period as much as possible to clarify “Legal, Institutional, and Social Attributeand Conceptual Difference” of “Gisaeng” and “Sampae” during the Korean Empire Period basedon “Korean Records and Historical Records” empirically.
“Sampae” that existed during Korean Empire Period (Emerged in August 1899 and disappearedin August 1910) was not “Gisaeng”. From August 1899 when it first emerged in the record toAugust 1910 when the term, “Sampae”, rapidly disappeared from the historical records, “Sampae”was constantly controlled and managed by the Korean Empire government and the JapaneseColonial Residency-General as Yechanggi. In the aspect of legal, institutional and social perception,“Sampae” had different properties from “Gisaeng”. Therefore, the Joseon society and people didnot treat “Sampae” as “Gisaeng”.
Defining Gisaeng of the Joseon as Galbo and prostitute, dividing Gisaeng into Ilpae, Ipae,Sampae, using the term, Ilpae, including Sampae in Gisaeng are all “Remains of the distortedhistory recorded by the Japanese residents in Korea and pro-Japanese groups.” Therefore, it istime to end such distorted definition and classification on Gisaeng of Korea in Korean andJapanese academics and the general public.
