Methods of communication amongst the current generation through communication media have drastically shifted from using the formal speech languages to the informal languages that are more commonly used in text messages.
Conflicts arise between the younger generations, which utilize mixture of both language forms, as the rapid changes widen the gaps of differences in methods of communicating. This research will explore different aspects regarding the topic and discuss the followings.
Firstly, the analysis of current state of language usage in youth culture of Korea will be conducted, by looking at the languages used in communication. The principle natures of adolescents such as lack of experiences, lower position of social rank and ability to revolutionize a new culture could be defined as being dynamic and volatile in other words.
Secondly, the research will attempt to explore the influences of the lingual cultures upon the slangs, which could be described as a reflection of the self-awareness and development of personality in youth.
Thirdly, by analyzing the characteristics of the current slangs that youth use, it attempts to categorically recognize the culture of youth today which could be an useful tool leading to a search for a method of improving for a positive outcome.
Finally, it will discuss the current state of slang usage amongst the adolescents through conducting a survey. The survey will be analyzed to search for any psychological evidences by studying the target of communication, usage time of internet, the topic of conversations and the relevance of slang to these elements.
This is also a procedure of deducing an appropriate method for improving the problems caused by the highly frequent use of the slangs by the youth in general.
The survey confirms the following characteristics of the adolescents using the slang.
The first time majority of the respondents came across such languages were during the primary school, which alerts for the higher attention in early education. In addition, the survey showed that they spent more time talking to their friends of same gender rather than their own parents.
When asked about the frequency of the cursing and swearing used daily, most students answered that they would swear or use slang approximately 10 to 50 occasions a day: however, they had no specific reasons for swearing, indicating that it was purely performed subconsciously and out of habit. Surprisingly, many respondents expected that there would be difficulties in making any progress towards solving the issue.
The survey further illustrates that the slang became a tool of discrimination amongst the friends, having high tendency to abuse specific parts of the body or the identity of others; and such offensive language that may hurt others are established upon the self-identity, therefore it could be concluded that using slang is another form of expressing an individual identity.
If misbehavior is a form of appearance in twisted ego, slang is not merely a form of language but rather, a reflection of the individualism in the current generation which is accustomed to negative media such as violent games.
The solution to these problems should be based upon changing the focus of education by promoting the respect for others and placing importance on the individual personal qualities. Furthermore, prevention of exposing the troubled adolescents from the certain physical social environments, which may potentially influence them in a negative manner during their developmental stage, is an essential step to prevent further damages to the youth in our society.
