Increasing the market share is one of the most important goals of marketing activities. There have been extensive studies on the factors affecting a brand’s market share or choice probability. Most of the traditional choice models are based on the market share principle stating that increasing the overall attractiveness of the brand by improving the quality or lowering the price leads to a higher market share (Bell, Keeney, and Little 1975). However, the real world phenomena do not necessarily abide by such a principle. Traditional choice models have been unable to reflect the fact that a newly introduced brand has a low probability of survival and furthermore, unable explain why a brand with even a high level of utility does not survive in the market. Based on the extended analyses of the random utility maximization principle, this study shows that if we assume that there are many submarkets with different sizes, brands’ market shares can vary across submarkets, even though the brands have the same level of utilities. Themarket share of a brand is determined not simply by its utility but the degree of consumers’ heterogeneity and the differences in sizes and competitive intensities of the submarkets.
This study proposes several strategic implications based on the analyses. This study proposes the concepts of dominance probability and the survival probability in addition to choice probability. If we assume that the number of competing alternatives proportionally increases with the size of the submarket, the expected market share will be the same for any brand in any of the submarkets. However, due to the large number of competitors in the large submarket, the survival probability in the large submarket will be smaller, which in turn leads to the relatively large market shares for the brands survived in the large submarket, which can cause themarket share difference among brands. In the high uncertainty condition, firms can adopt one of the two strategies. One is to go into a large submarket and dominate the competitors (high risk/high return) and the other is to go into a small submarket, avoid competition and focus on survival (low risk/low return).
