This study investigated its qualities as biographical literature, based on the text of "The life of Gakjeo" written by Jongwoon Byeon with the pen name of Sojae, who is one of representative novelists of civil literature in the late Chosun Dynasty. Most of preceding researches on The life of Gakjeo has discussed the point of view that it is a novel rather than a documentary literature. The life of Gakjeo certainly shows some difference from other biographies in terms of its content and form, and yet it has a typical aspect of biography in terms of its motive and descriptive structure. That means, it is easily found everywhere in the life of Gakjeo that the story has several characteristic qualities as biography, with respect to 1) its motive, 2) realization of the didactic by a storyteller, and 3) biographic elements embedded in the descriptive structure. These descriptive characteristics of the life of Gakjeo result from the manner of writer's explaining a story told by many other people about a single happening occurred over a short time, which is an aspect of documentary literature in the 19th century. Externally, it is like a simple novel in the way of solving conflicts between main figures, but internally, the story well recontextualized a happening arose between heroic characters with physically strong power. In this sense, Sojae achieved success in showing more authenticity than that of real story. In conclusion, The life of Gakjeo has biographic qualities in that it represented the heroic deeds in a narrative way that a boy, named Gakjeo, having an excellent power solves citizen's difficulties through Korean wrestling and realizes their communal good.
