다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract) kakao i 다국어 번역

This thesis is an attempt to study the problem of love in Hemingway's novel, 'The Old Man and the Sea' and interprete it on the basis of Erich Fromm's theory of love.
I have concluded it as follows:
In Hemingway's early novels, such as 'The Sun Also Rises', 'A Farewell to Arms', 'For Whom the Bell Tolls', 'Across the River into the Trees', there is largely erotic love between the hero and the heroine, though partiy there being brotherly love, but there is no universal love. Only in his last novel, 'The Old Man and the Sea', there is universal love with relation to all persons, all creatures, all things in the world. All persons are all equals in human nature, so their talent, intelligence, and knowledge are knowledge are of no importance in love. All creatures and all things, given 'soul' by the hero, converse among them as if they were like all brothers.
The writer puts an emphasis on the idea of universal love on the ground of humanism that all human beings are essentially the same in human nature that if they, whether high or low, helpless or powerful, have loving for one another, have humility, they can get solidarity and interdependence among them, avoiding immoderate individualism and establishing sound and healthy human society. For this, man must have the will that he should not be destroyed but defeated.
