ABSTRACTThe main purposes of this paper are to find the determinants of consciousness on
economic inequality, and to examine the meaning of these determinants. Knowledge or
consciousness is known to be determined by both the social structure and the culture.
But most of previous studies have focused on the influence of structural factors and
neglected the cultural implication of these factors, or vice versa. This paper suggests
that many factors representing the social structure should be regarded as being cultur-
ally embedded at the same time. In other words, the factors determining the con-
sciousness of economic inequality have both the structural effect and the cultural ef-
fect.Analyzed in this frame, followings are found; (1) In Korea, the regionalism and sub-
jective status, education level are the major determinants of inequality consciousness.
(2) Some structural factors such as the occupation and family income are not the di-
rect factors determining the consciousness but indirect mediating factors. (3) All of
them, especially the regionalism and the education, are the variables having the double
meaning, i.e. both instrumental and cultural.
