The aim of this study is to observe the animal symbolism in The pearl and makes clear what it is. The animal symbolism is a kind of peculiarity in Steinbeck's novels Many kinds of animals appear in his novels. He was much interested in animals. The reason for that comes from his interest in nature and Darwin's the theory of evolution.
He compared characters to animals by means of symbol i c method of simile. This comparison gives the primitive mood to readers. The peculiarities of the animal symbolism in The pearl are as follows:
Firstly, this shows the antagonism of the oppressing and the oppressed. Through this antagonism the readers can easily find the meaning of the life.
Secondly, this reveals the bottom of human life, so to speak, the vulgarities the primitivism, the ugliness and the uncultivated.
Thirdly, this gives men the indirect experience. The facts that we can acquire from this are that the men and the animals are almost same in the basic level and in a certain point, all the more, the men are worse than the animals.
Observing the men through the animal symbolism they are weak obssessed with the self and become alienated from the belief. After all the behavior against nature is evil. Though The pearl is a primitive epic, this suggests many problems we must know.
