The purpose of this study is to examine and explain the derivation of the “supreme principle of morality” presented in Chapter 1 of Groundwork of metaphysics of moral. Under the main purpose of Groundwork to “explore and establish” the supreme principles of morality(GMS IV: 392), Chapter 1 is located in the context of “exploring” the supreme principles of morality by analyzing common people’s daily moral judgments. Unlike previous studies, in consideration of the purpose and overall argumentation in Chapter 1 of Groundwork 1, I will examine the argument for deriving the “supreme principle of morality” in Chapter 1 of Groundwork 1. And in this process, it will be clarified what it means to make “the universal lawfulness of the action in general” as the principle of will. When clarifying the ‘derivation argument’, this study will examine Korsgaard’s article on this issue. Kosgaard’s research correctly captures that the supreme principle of morality to be derived in Chapter 1 plays a dual role as an principle of execution and at the same time as a principle of judgment and has the advantage of explaining Kant’s theory of the rational agency well.
