Our society has entered an unprecedented age of aging. Continuous aging is accompanied by several negative emotions. Each period of our lives is the first time for everyone. Age doesn’t make us wise on our own. As we get older, we become interested in philosophy that deals with the most essential parts of life. On the other hand, in our society, discussions on old age are concentrated in the welfare field, so a richer philosophical discourse is requested. This paper seeks to find a way to restore self-esteem by shaping life as a work of art in old age.
According to Ricoeur, self-esteem is self-interpretation. Self-esteem is gained when one acknowledges that one has the ability to interpret and that one is capable of following a well-thought-out choice with the goal of a good life. This proves that you are an ethical subject who pursues a good life. Self-esteem is a self-interpretation created by others because it can be obtained only by considering others. When self-interpretation and practice are followed, experience will become an active process of maturity and expansion, shaping life as an art.
Old age is the time to focus on the relationship of the few with sincerity rather than many social relationships. The hermetic consideration of friendship means a lot in the discourse of old age. This paper aims to present life as an art to the elderly by proving that the context of harmony, creation of newness, and consistency that protects trust in the process of self-esteem and consideration of others can result in existential aesthetics in the formation of Ricoeur’s Self Identity.
