This study analyzes the arts and numbers(術數, shushu) structure of the Theory of Yin-Yang Punishment and Virtue(刑德, Xing-De) found in the Tianwenxun chapter of Huainanzi and examines its relation to Daoism. The Theory of Huainanzi is largely classified into two types. First, Yueqi(月氣) Xing-De is a theory that explains the annual cycle of the waxing and waning(消息) of Yin-Yang based on the movement of the Big Dipper and the conjunction of the sun and moon. Huainanzi reconstructs this into a model called the Seven Habitations of Xing-De, explaining that the God of the Big Dipper governs the generation and destruction of all things while moving back and forth through seven zones, including the Room, Gate, and Field. This structure of Yueqi Xing-De was inherited and modified into the Six Habitations of Xing-De theory of the early Daoist scripture, Taiping Jing. Next, Ganzhi(干支) Xing-De is a type of astrology based on the Ganzhi theory of Yin-Yang and the Five Elements, primarily utilized as military divination(兵占) to predict the outcome of wars. As confirmed in the calendar for selecting auspicious days(擇日曆) by the Tang dynasty Daoist Zhang Wanfu(張萬福), the principles of Ganzhi Xing-De were adopted as a concrete mechanism for determining Daoist rituals and taboos. In conclusion, the Yin-Yang Xing-De Theory of Huainanzi is an intellectual product equipped with a concrete shushu system, going beyond mere political-philosophical discourse. It holds academic value in that it provided essential theoretical nourishment for the formation of later Daoist doctrines and practical arts.
