글래컨의 지리환경사상사 연구와 그 함의 = Glacken’s Study on History of Geographical and Environmental Ideas and Its Implications - Focused on Traces on the Rhodian Shore -

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 사우어학파의 일원인 글래컨이 1967년에 출판한 『로도스 섬 해변의 흔적』이라는 방대한 지리환경사상사 연구가 나오게 된 개인적·사회적 배경과 구성체계 및 특성, 그리고 이 연구가 가지는 의의와 유의성을 살펴보았다. 이 책은 고대부터 18세기말까지 인간과 환경의 관계에 대한 서구의 사고를, 설계된 지구(설계론), 환경의 영향론, 환경에 대한 인간의 영향이라는 3가지 유형으로 나누어 각 시대별로 이 3가지 사고가 어떻게 전개 되어 왔는지를 수많은 원전을 포함한 방대한 문헌에 근거하여 체계적으로 고찰하였다. 이는 이전까지는 이렇게 방대한 작업의 선행연구가 지리학뿐만 아니라 다른 학문 분야에서도 시도된 적이 없었다는 점에서 매우 독창적인 연구이며, 특히 세번째 사고인 환경에 대한 인간의 영향 문제를 성찰하게 함으로써 1960년대와 70년대에 촉발된 환경·생태 운동의 사상적 기반으로 작용하였다. 날로 심각해지는 환경문제 속에서 지리환경사상에 대한 관심은 ‘생태학적 전환’을 겪는 등 날로 확대·발전하고 있다. 특히 오늘날은 이 책이 가지는 시대적 한계를 극복 하기 위해 인간-자연 관계에 대한 사고를 담론분석적 차원에서 접근하고 있으며, 또 기본적 전제로 인간-자연 에 대한 이분법적 사고를 지양하면서 대안적인 자연에 대한 상상력을 지향하는 다양한 흐름들이 출현하고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

1967 by Glacken who was a member of Sauerians. This book was a wide ranging one which traced three notions on nature and culture in western thoughts from ancient times to the end of the 18 th century. These three notions included designed earth, environmental influence on humans, human influence on environment. And this book was very creative that there was never an attempt to study this theme in other disciplines as well as in geography previously. Especially, this book’s emphasis on the human influence on environment encouraged ideologically the environmental and ecological movement in 1960’s and 70’s. Currently to overcome the limits of this book, new trends of geographical and environmental ideas are the analysis on the discourses in man-nature ideas, and the avoidance binary thoughts on man-nature.
