시진핑 시대 종교의 중국화 - 맥락과 해석 -

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper argues that the sinicization of religion by Xi’s regime is not only a response to the contemporary transformation of the religious landscape in China, but also aims at strengthening China’s soft power for the Xi’s new era. Modernization in the post-Mao era has resulted in successful development, but it has unintentionally led to the explosive growth of unauthorized Protestant churches. In response, by sinicizing religion, the party-state tries to regulate religions and thereby asserts its hegemony on the sacred, that is, its authority over religions. The new policy of sinicizing religion shares the regulation of religion in common with the conventional policy of ‘religion compatible with socialism.’ However, the new policy differs from the old in that it attempts to promote China’s soft power by elevating ‘Chinese’ religions and cultures. Finally, this paper sees negatively the prospects that the sinicization of religion from above can adequately respond to the problems of meaning engendered by China’s compressed modernization.
