A unit hydrograph is defined as the direct runoff hydrograph resulting from 1cm of precipitation excess distributed uniformly over a watershed for a specific duration.
The unit hydrograph is useful tool to the hydrologist for extrapolating available data. Because of the usefulness of the unit hydrograph to the hydrologist, procedures that provide both speed and optimal determination of unit hydrographs are desirable.
Probably the most common and simple method of unit hydrograph determination is from the analysis of rainfall and streamflow records by the least squares method.
The least squares method by the symmetric Toeplitx matrix does not guarantee ralizable hydrograph, i.e., hydrographs with only nonnegative ordinates.
Therefore linear programming method by the GAMS program code is compared with the least squares method by the Toeplitz matrix, one of the most efficient and robust methods to obtain realizable unit hydrographs by using real data.
Based on the above comparative studies, the discussions are made and conclusions will be derived.
