People whose family has declined but was somewhat influential in the past always love to mention their ancestors and family. Telling about who their ancestors were, what they did, and how great they were, they implicitly reveal their pride in family. Such family consciousness may restrict a person`s behavior or determine his/her behavioral pattern. This study examined the process that Hong`s family from Pungsan established its status as a reputable family from Hong Yi-sang(洪履祥) to Hong Joong -seong(洪重聖) and family consciousness expressed by Hong Ryang-ho and Hong Gyeong-mo. Hong`s family from Pungsan originated from Hong Ji-gyeong in the Koryo Dynasty. Entering the Joseon Dynasty, Modang Hong Yi-sang led the revival of family through his passing the civil service examination and successful career, Hong Yeong extended the influence of the family, and Hong Joo-won, who was a son-in-law of King Seonjo, raised the family to the rank of noble family. Among the sons of Hong Joo-won, the eldest one Hong Man-yong was most prosperous in descendents, and Hong Man-hoi was succeeded by Hong Joong-seong who played the role of expanding the boundary of Hong`s family. Following them, Hong Yang-ho and Hong Gyeong-mo expressed their family cons- ciousness by organizing the ancestors` anthology, compiling epitaphs, and integrating records on the pedigree. A finding from the pattern of family consciousness expressions by Hong Yang-ho and Hong Gyeong-mo is that, when the family confronted with a situation of crisis, family cons- ciousness functioned as a driving force to support the family and overcome the crisis. In this sense, the meaning of family consciousness is considered still valid to us who are living the present age.
