The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of English language learning supported by multimodal videoconferencing for North Korean youth students. In the fourth industrial revolution era, the customized contents and ICT-based instruction are innovative and meaningful English teaching approaches to the North Korean students.
As a result of this study, it has been revealed that the customized multimodal videoconferencing, especially designed for the North Korean youth group has increased the learners’ English abilities and promoted positive attitudes to English language learning, because the new learning contexts have been using various teaching resources
and materials provided. In addition, the new learning contexts using multimodal videoconferencing have facilitated the North Korean defectors to have better understanding of the current Korean society and its contemporary cultures, which reflects everyday Korean languages. By using authentic teaching materials representing Korean contemporary cultures, the learners can have genuine experiences of the Korean society. Finally, ICT-based videoconferencing can help the learners enhance the Internet and computer literacies, which are one of the fundamental aspects to prepare for the new era.
