The mind healing program of Byron Katie, called “The Work”, has contributed for several years to the solution of layperson’s life problems in the U.S. and Europe. The peculiarity is that Katie’s mind healing program is, in contrast to the mind healing programs of spiritual leader of religious and academic background, a program of a layperson without any religious and academic teaching career. If someone has a religious and academic background, his concept of mind healing would have an ideological and theoretical basis. But her mind healing program is presented mainly in the form of Field Manual or in a form of report of practiced mind healing program.
There we can not find any statement concerned with the ideological, theoretical foundations of her mind healing program. To answer the question of what kind of an ideological, theoretical identity Katie’s mind healing program has, would be very curious and interesting, in the sense that her mind healing program is very effective in its results and with it very popular. For a further development of such a theory, such a study would be very helpful. From this background, the present study has been launched.
Generally tend the public opinions to diagnose the cause of mental illness to be rather outside than inside. But the enlightened people think differently about the cause of mental illness. They tend to diagnose the cause of mental illness to be not outside but inside. (This contrast is similar to the contrast between geocentrism heliocentrism in the theory of the planets.) For example, teachers from the oriental tradition of Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism say almost unanimously that we have to pay special attention to the mind, if we want to turn unhappy life into happy life. Since all mind problems are usually caused by nothing more than the mind itself. Katie’s mind healing program, like the mind healing programs of oriental tradition, shares the idea that the mental misery is made by the mind itself and therefore we must try to maintain and control our mind. However, this similarity is only superficial. Katie’s mind healing program differs in fact from the theories of the aforementioned oriental tradition. Oriental mind healing program, which emphasizes the mind, is more idealistic, while Katie’s mind healing program that emphasizes the unity of mind and reality, is more realistic. In this way this paper attempts to define the philosophical and theoretical identity of Katie’s mind healing program. At the end it is said about the possibility of a post Katiean program of mind healing.
