Parental Control and Korean Family : Comparing Anglo American and Korean Cultural Beliefs

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 한국가족에서의 부모통제 및 부모통제가 아동발달에 대해 갖는 시사점과 관련된 문헌들을 고찰하였다. 문화적 맥락과 부모 행동 간의 관계를 탐색해 보기 위해, 미국의 앵글로 아메리칸 문화와 한국 문화의 신념체계 차이를 논의하였다. 권위주의적 양육태도에 대한 서구의 개념은 자민족 중심적이며, 한국의 부모통제가 문화신념체계를 근간으로 하는 것임을 포착하지 못하고 있다. 미국 백인 아동들에 비해 동아시아 아동들은 엄격한 부모통제에 대해 덜 부정적이며, 부모통제를 그들의 사회적 성공을 위한 부모관심으로 여기는 경향이 있다. 한국의 부모통제는 그 사회역사적 맥락 속에서 화목한 부모·자녀 관계와 긍정적 아동성과를 강조하는 집산주의적 부모양육수행으로 정의 내릴 수 있을 것이다. 결론적으로, 본 연구는 문화신념체계가 부모양육의 정당화되고 바람직한 방식을 정의한다는 것을 강조한다.
앞으로의 연구는 토착적 접근과 비교적 접근을 모두 적용함으로써 문화와 부모양육행동 간의 관계를 살펴봐야 할 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article reviews the literature on Korean parental control and its implications on child development. To explore the relation between cultural context and parenting behavior, differences in belief systems of Anglo American and Korean culture are discussed. The paper argues that Western concepts of authoritarian parenting are ethnocentric and do not capture Korean parental control as a function of underlying Korean cultural belief system. In comparison with Anglo American children, East Asian children are less negative about strict parental control and tend to perceive it as parental concern for their social success. Korean parental control may be defined in its sociohistorical context as a collectivistic childrearing practice emphasizing both harmonious parent-child relationship and positive child outcomes. In conclusion, this review highlights that cultural belief systems define legitimate and desirable ways of parenting. Future research needs to examine the relations between culture and parental behavior by employing both indigenous and comparative approaches.
